Abstract
424,872. Back-pedalling brake and free-wheel hubs. REHNBERG, P. H. E., 5, Colbjornsensgade, and STEVNS, N. P. O., 21, Mitchellsgade, both in Copenhagen. Aug. 29, 1934, No. 24842. Addition to 413,556. [Class 136 (ii)] The back-pedalling brake and free-wheel hub described in the parent Specification is modified in the following manner, chiefly with the object of automatically disengaging the driving- pawls to enable the cycle to be wheeled backwards. A ring 8, Fig. 1, formed with rounded teeth 9, Figs. 2 and 3, is mounted between ratchet rings 15, 17 on the sprocket 7 and on a ring 13 respectively, the ring 13 being non-rotatably secured to the sprocket 7. The teeth of the ratchet rings 15, 17 are in alignment, and engage pawls 14 on a brake drum 4 to drive the hub 3. The ring 8 is secured to a disc 12 by means of tongues 11 on the disc engaging slots 10, and the disc 12 is provided with ratchet teeth 31 adapted on back-pedalling to engage pawls 32 on a rotatable disc 23 to expand the brake band 16 through arms and cams. Upon wheeling the cycle backwards, the disc 12 and ring 8 are held by the pawls 32, and the pawls 14 move the sprocket 7 back until the rounded teeth 9 on the ring 8 project between the teeth 15, 17 (Fig. 3), and disengage the pawls 14 to permit free rotation of the wheel. Slots 34 for the passage of the tongues 11 through the ring 13 allow partial rotation of the disc 12 relatively to the sprocket 7 against the action of springs 18. The brake band 16 may be expanded by a single cam or two cams between its ends.
