Abstract

597,776. Ratchet clutches; locking levers. COLLYEAR, J. R. Aug. 27, 1945, No. 21915. [Classes 80(ii) and 80(iii)] A free-wheel clutch or detent similar to that described in Specification 505,571 comprises two sleeves 2, 3, respectively free to rotate on and secured to a shaft 1, and surrounded by a spring 5 which has coils all of the same diameter and is surrounded by a release sleeve 8 having at one end a portion 9 of reduced diameter overlying a groove 4 in the sleeve 2. The sleeve 2 has integral with it a gear wheel 11 rotation of which in the direction to wind up the spring 5 results in a drive to the shaft 1, while rotation in the opposite sense allows the gear 11 to free-wheel relative to the shaft 1. Turning the outer sleeve 8 by means of an arm 10 in a direction to unwind the spring 5 disconnects the sleeve 2 from the shaft 1. Fig. 2 shows the device applied as a one-way detent for locking a vehicle hand-brake lever, the latter carrying a toothed sector 18 meshing the toothed wheel 11. Release is effected by depressing the centre button 22 acting on the release arm 10.
