Abstract

677,219. Turning-gear. CONTINENTAL MOTORS CORPORATION. Feb. 26, 1951, No. 4574/51. Class 7(v) In a manually operated engine-starting mechanism comprising a clutch assembly having driving and driver members 18, 17, Fig. 6, normally positioned out of engagement, the driving clutch member comprising a shaft 19 carrying the clutch element 18 at one end and supported for axial movement to engage and disengage the clutch members, manually operable means connected to the shaft 19 to partly rotate the shaft, the means comprising a crank arm 27 keyed to the shaft and a cable 41, Fig. 2, attached to the crank arm 27, means shifting the shaft 19 and comprising a lever 30, one end of which abuts the shaft and which lever is rockable in a plane containing .the axis of the shaft, and a compound pulley 36, 37 rotatably supported by the other end of the lever 30, the cable 41 being attached to the pulley, there is provided a second cable connected to the pulley and manually operable, first to rock the lever 30 to shift the shaft 19 axially and then rotate the pulley to wind cable 41 to actuate the crank arm 27 for partly rotating the shaft upon engagement of the clutch member. In the gearcase 11, Fig. 6, at the rear of the engine is a gear 14 on the crank shaft 13 which gear meshes with a further gear 15 on a stub shaft 16 that is provided with the tooth clutch member 17; a spring 29 normally maintains the clutch members out of engagement. The second cable having one end fixed to the larger pulley 36, Fig. 2, passes over two more pulleys to a knob on the instrument panel whilst cable 41 is provided with an arcuate supporting portion. Upon pulling the second cable a spring 50 opposes rotation of the pulleys and hence movement of the crank 27 so that the lever 30 is rocked and axially moves the shaft 19 to engage the clutch whereupon further movement of the shaft and lever 30 is prevented: continued pull on the first cable rotates the pulleys by overcoming the spring 50 and so rocking the crank 27 and turning shaft 19 to start the engine.
