Convention date, June 5, 1935. [Classes 78 (ii) and 78 (v)] A remote control device for the aerial winding mechanism of aircraft includes a flexible shaft and a clutch between the drive and the winding drum, the arrangement being such that when the shaft is rotated in one direction, the clutch is engaged and the aerial wound on the drum, while when it is turned in the opposite direction, the clutch is disengaged and the aerial runs out freely by its own weight. The drum b, Fig. 1, is loose on a shaft d which is driven through bevel gearing by a crank-actuated flexible shaft a. A clutch member c slidably mounted on the shaft is controlled by a cam-actuated lever c<1> against the force of a spring c<2>. The cam h<1> is mounted on a shaft h which carries a pinion f capable of a movement limited by fixed abutments g, g<1>, Fig. 2. The pinion engages a toothed wheel e which is driven from a cylinder d' on the shaft d by means of brake blocks e<1>. When the crank a<1> is turned in either direction, the gear e is driven by friction until the arm f <1> of the pinion f comes into contact with an abutment. This movement of the pinion is sufficient to engage or disengage the clutch. A similar cam n and lever m<1> are used to control the application of a brake band m to the drum b. The movement of the drum b is transmitted by bevel gears i and a flexible shaft i<1> to an indicating device k in the cockpit. In a modification the connection between the cylinder d<1> and gear e is effected by a spring-tensioned brake band so arranged that it acts as a coupling only in one direction of rotation. In another modification the connection between the parts d<1>, e is a pawl-and-ratchet mechanism. In a further modification a ratchet wheel s, Fig. 7, connected to the shaft d is engaged by a pin t<1> on an arm t fixed to the shaft h.
