Abstract
573,043. Winches. BRACKETT, J. F. Oct. 19, 1943, No. 17203. [Class 78 (v)] A winch of the kind provided with a brake drum loosely mounted on a main shaft, to which is keyed a spur wheel and a drum and/or gypsy, and having one or more pawls pivoted on the side of the brake drum and co-operating with a ratchet wheel keyed to the main shaft, is characterised by the spur wheel being driven by a gear which is movable info neutral position. The spur wheel 4 on the main shaft 2 is driven from a gear 11 on the shaft 9 either directly or through gears 21, 22, Fig. 2. The gear 11 is shifted from one driving position to the other, or to neutral, by turning a handle 12 which is mounted on a shaft 13 carrying an arm 14. A projection 15 on the arm engages a groove 16 formed in a boss 17 secured to the gear 11. The brake drum 3 carries pawls 8 which engage a ratchet wheel 5. The. drum is engaged by a brake-band 23, one end of which is connected at 24 to a brake-lever 25, and the other end of which is attached to a shaft 26 on which the lever is mounted. A spring 27 connects the upper end of the lever to the casing 1. A stubshaft 28 carries a handle 29 and arms 30, 32. The arm 30 carries a roller 31, which can be brought into engagement with a notch 34 in the brake-lever to slacken the brake if the arm 32 can pass into a groove 35 in the boss 17. The latter movement can take place only when the gear 11 is in neutral.
