Abstract

[Also in Division F2] A ratchet hoist comprises brake means including a one-way clutch 39 arranged between a fixed brake ring 17 and a rotatable brake ring 11 so mounted as to be axially frictionally engaged, when the brake is operative, between friction rings 10a, associated with a pressure ring 9 keyed to a shaft 8 and further rings 10b associated with a drive element 12. The drive element 12 is threaded on to a brake nut 15, which is in turn threaded on to the shaft 8. A non-corrosive slip ring 14 is pressed by a predetermined amount into a tapered cavity between the brake nut 15 and a ratchet wheel 13, by the element 12 which is then fixed relative to the brake nut 15 by a pin 28. The ratchetwheel 13 is operated by a reversible spring pawl 24 mounted in a casing 4 into which an operating lever 6, 5 is inserted. Movement of the lever 5, 6 in the load lifting direction causes nut 15 and ring 12 to screw up on shaft 8 to lock the brake ring 11 thereto whereupon the load is lifted via toothed wheel 7 coupled to a load hook chain pulley 3. Any tendency for the load to reverse the direction of the shaft 8 is prevented by the one-way clutch member 39. For lowering the load, the ratchet wheel 13 is reversed which unscrews the brake nut 15 and the friction coupling to the one-way clutch 39 is broken until the shaft 8 has now rotated sufficient for the re-application thereof. A catch 16 on the free end of the shaft 8 has an arcuate recess 48 in which a pin 31 secured in the brake nut engages to set the limits of relative rotation between the nut and shaft, and a recess 50 in which a spring ball 29 registers to locate the brake nut in the brake disengaged position in the no load condition.
