Abstract
469,967. Loud - handling machines; winches. YALE & TOWNE MANUFACTURING CO. Feb. 17, 1936, No. 4756. Convention date, June 22, 1935. [Classes 78 (iii) and 78 (v)] Lifting and pulling mechanism, for controlling the operation of a work or lifting shaft, is provided with a load-holding ratchet wheel loose on the shaft but clamped frictionally thereto by the axial movement of a reversibly-operable ratchet driving-wheel mounted on a threaded portion of the shaft, the ratchet driving wheel being operated by a handle carrying a reversible pawl. In the illustrated form the handle 50, by 'withdrawing and reversing the pawl 52 through the medium of the sliding bolt 57, can be made to drive the ratchet wheel 35 in either direction. When the wheel 35 is moved clockwise to hoist the load, the screw 34 causes it to move axially and jam the retaining ratchet wheel 32 together with the friction disc 33 against the member 30 fixed on the shaft 29, thus driving the pinion 27 which gears with the pinion 42 on the shaft of the load chain wheel 42a. When the handle is released, the load is sustained by a pawl 45 engaging the ratchet wheel 32. To permit gravity lowering, or paying out under the strain of the load, the pawl 52 is reversed and the handle 50 rotated sufficiently to ease the pressure between the members 30 and 33. Rapid adjustment of the unloaded chain is obtained by rotating the ratchet wheel 35 by means of the hand wheel 36. The appliance is anchored or supported by a swivelling hook 11 and may be used by attaching a load hook 15, Fig. 3 to the chain, or the hook 15 might be attached to a strap supported under the lug 20 and on the side lugs 21 to form a loop in the chain, a third load hook in this case being carried by a sprocket running in the loop of the chain.
