Abstract

1,156,088. Hoist overload prevention device. EATON YALE & TOWNE Inc. 8 Nov., 1967 [7 April, 1967], No. 50727/67. Heading B8B. [Also in Division F2] An overload preventing device on a hoist which incorporates a combined clutch and brake mechanism, i.e. a Weston brake, comprises a locking plate 22 rotationally fixed relative to the hoist body and disposed between two parts 23, 34 of a ratchet disc, the two parts being maintained in axially spaced relation by a Belleville spring 38 during normal operation, but axially compressed into engagement with the plate 22 to prevent rotation of an operating wheel 14 when an excessive load is placed on the hoist. Hoisting of a load on a chain 17 via sprocket 21 and gears 19, 18 is accomplished by rotating the wheel 14 by hand or power which through threaded engagement with shaft 12 causes compression of the clutch and brake mechanism comprising pressure ring 39, ratchet disc 23, 34, friction ring 40 and friction disc 15. In the hoisting direction the ratchet disc freewheels over a pawl disc 31 secured to the hoist body and in the lowering direction the ratchet is locked so long as the clutch and brake mechanism is in the axially compressed condition.
