Abstract

526,091. Self-sustaining gear. MANN, EGERTON & CO., Ltd., and LEEDS, E. F. Oct. 20, 1939, No. 28374. [Class 78 (v)] A brake device for hoisting gear which offers resistance to rotation of a shaft in one direction only, that is, when lowering the load, comprises a pawl 12 pivoted at 11 on a disc 9 secured for example, to the countershaft of a hand operated crane and normally spring- engaged with a ratchet wheel 6 to which is normally applied a lined brake band 2 disposed in a fixed casing 1. The pressure of the band 2 is adjustable by a screw 17 having threaded engagement with one of a pair of lugs 3 on the band. The pawl may be disengaged by lever 14, 16 pivoted to the disc 9 and engaging the tail of the pawl. Adjustment of the band may be effected by a series of bolts threaded into the casing and abutting on the exterior of the band.
