Abstract

317,957. Howard, Ltd., J. & F., and Ashby, W. H. July 13, 1928. Clutches, friction and ratchet.- Hoists and other lifting-apparatus are actuated and controlled by a rotatable member A geared to the lifting- apparatus and forming one element of a friction clutch, the other element B of the clutch, and an actuating member C which is adapted to impart rotary movement to the member B through the medium of a friction drive, and to move it into and out of engagement with the member A. The members A, B, C are arranged coaxially about a shaft D mounted at one end in a combined journal and thrust bearing E secured to the framework F and having at its other end a threaded portion D<1> which engages a threaded portion C' of the member C. The member C is mounted in a bearing I secured to the framework F, and a flange C<11> on its inner end engages between an annular plate K secured to the member B and a series of friction discs L mounted in a recess in the end of that member. A spring O is placed between the outer end of the shaft D and a flanged member P disposed within the member C. A wheel J attached to the member C is rotated by hand or power. Unintentional reverse rotation of the member B is prevented by a pawl which engages ratchet teeth H.
