Abstract
214,029. Paterson, D. C. Feb. 7, 1923. Winches; driving- gear; self-sustaining gear; brakes.-Comprises a special arrangement and combination of parts forming a compact geared winch of the type employing selfsustaining gears in which band brakes are associated with one-way roller clutches so as to be non-effective during hoisting but which come into action automatically on the ceasing of the winding effort, the lowering of the load being effected by a slight backward movement of the winding handle which does not rotate beyond this movement while lowering is taking place. One feature of the present arrangement comprises particular means for relieving the brake band for lowering. In Figs. 1 and 2 the turning of the handle 1 in the direction for hoisting expands clutch members so that the shaft 2 is connected to a flange 7 fixed to the pinion 8 which is connected bv double-reduction spur gearing to the toothed flange 11 on the loosely-mounted drum. The flange 7 has a one-way roller clutch connection with a surrounding brake drum 15 so that the band brake on the latter becomes effective to sustain the load immediately the handle 1 is released. To lower, the handle is pressed in the reverse direction, thereby rotating ratchet wheel 21 to operate a spring pawl 22 to relieve the brake by compressing the spring 17 until the load runs down by gravity.
