182,342. Alexander, A. E., (Steward Davit & Equipment Corporation). Aug. 2, 1921. Winches; self-sustaining gear. - Comprises a particular arrangement and combination of parts forming a winch. A spur-wheel e, attached to or formed integral with the barrel c, and driven by spur gearing from a hand-operated shaft e<2>, carries equally-spaced gravity-operated pawls f<3>, projecting into, and engaging ratchet teeth on, the interior of an open-sided loose brake drum F. During lifting, the pawls slip over the teeth and the brake drum remains stationary, but on the lifting effort ceasing, the pawls couple the brake and winding-drums to sustain the load. The weighted lever f<1> can be raised by hand to ease the brake to permit braked lowering.
