Abstract

228,255. East, T. A. Oct. 30, 1923. Winches; retarding-apparatus for winding and paying-out apparatus; self-sustaining gear. - A hand winch, especially for use on aircraft for winding up or paying out a wireless aerial, comprises a drum D having a ratchet wheel E fixed thereto, an escapement wheel G carrying pawls F engaging with the ratchet wheel, a rocker J having pallets H engaging the wheel G. and an oscillating member L controlling the rocker. As the weight on the cable is paid out the escapement controls its descent, while the ratchet gear permits the cable to be wound in freely without actuating the escapement. When winding-in, the load may be sustained at any point bv a pawl 5 carried by the drum engaging a fixed toothed wheel T. The pawl is controlled by a handle Q and is maintained out of engagement with the wheel T during unwinding.
