Abstract

943,309. Winches. C. RAMBALDI. Dec. 5, 1961 [Dec. 7, 1960], No. 43460/61. Heading B8B. A winch with self-sustaining means for preventing running back of its cable under load is designed for quick release of the sustaining means for use in such applications as sail setting. It consists of a reel 16, Fig. 1, mounted on a boss 15 upstanding from the base of a cup-like casing 11 whose peripheral wall has an aperture (not shown) through which the cable 38, Fig. 4, emerges. The winding handle 18 has an axle 17 which is fitted into the boss 15 and carries a pawl 46 for engagement with the ratchet 42 in winding, the sustaining means being a like ratchet 27 carried by the stationary reel housing. In use the handle is oscillated between the broken line positions to haul in the cable, but to release the cable for free run out it is swung anticlockwise beyond the extreme position shown until pawl 46 is disengaged by striking a fixed stop 53 and pawl 27 is disengaged by a pin 44 carried by the handle. To limit the free run out to a predetermined extent, the cable may carry a step member 54 engageable with a corresponding fixed stop 55. The reel 16 has a narrow peripheral groove such that the cable is wound thereon in a single spiral.
