Abstract
831,195. Spring-return cable reels. RUSHWORTH, D. Aug. 2, 1957 [May 4, 1956], No. 13764/56. Class 99(2). [Also in Group XXX] A self-winding reel for use with safety lines comprises a drum on to which the safety line is wound, a cradle to support the drum, a spring to turn the drum to rewind thereon the safety line withdrawn from the drum, a guide through which the safety line passes, a member on the safety line to engage the guide after a predetermined length of safety line has been withdrawn from the drum and means to allow movement of the guide after engagement by the member to allow for a short additional length of safety line being withdrawn from the drum. In Fig. 1 the drum B is mounted on a pivoted arm D which is held in its normal position by a spring or weight E and is movable a short distance up to a stop F against the action of the spring or weight. The arm D also carries a guide G through which a safety line A passes. Secured on the safety line is a sleeve or button H. Sufficient safety line may be drawn off and then the sleeve or button reaches the guide G, and prevents further withdrawal of the line. The guide may be carried by an arm pivoted on the drum cradle and movable against the action of a spring. In Fig. 2 the arm J is fixed to the cradle C and the guide G is movably mounted on the arm J against the action of the spring L. In another embodiment (not shown) the guide is secured to the end of a chain having its other end secured to the drum cradle. A spring is provided in association with the chain. Alternatively the guide could be carried by a spring loaded lazy-tong arm.
