Abstract

1,034,653. Rope railways. BABCOCK & WILCOX Ltd. April 2, 1963 [April 2, 1962], No. 12554/62. Heading B7L. A safety device for a person traversing an elevated way 3, comprises a rope 4 acting as a hand hold and being fixed at one end 16 and wound on to a drum 20 at the other whereby the rope can be tensioned before use by raising handle 31 to rotate the drum 20, a pin in an appropriate hole 37 in guide 32 holding the handle in position; personal harness is attached to a slider 50 on the rope, an arm 52, Fig. 8, of which is at an angle to a plane through the axis of bore 52 corresponding to the inclination of a slot 44 in rope supports 40, Fig. 5, each support comprising a cylindrical sleeve 43 and supporting ribs 41, 42. The slider 50 can pass through the supports without disconnection from the rope. In Fig. 10 (not shown), the rope is bent through a right angle at its end 16 and a recessed pulley enables the slider to follow the rope. The rope may be alternatively tensioned by forming a kink in it. The various supports 40 and supports for the drum 20 and handle 31 are attached to a framework of girders by hook bolts.
