Class 120(2) For the purpose of winding a tail or tails on a cheese tube prior to winding a cheese, the winding machine is provided with a detachable jig T3 that can be dropped into place to limit the lateral movement of a yarn when temporarily guided by hand. The yarn 24 passing through the traverse guide 12 is guided by the finger 26 of the operative against a finger 16 of the jig 13 to form on the tube 2, driven by the drum 10, a tail 27, and then, if necessary, a second tail 27<SP>1</SP> may be formed against a second finger 15 of the jig. The jig may hook over a bar 7 of the machine, which carries also the tube support 6, and be guided by a projection engaging a groove 20 and by a flange 7 on the tube holder 1.
