Abstract

307,202. Terry, C. Feb. 23, 1928. Measuring-tapes.-Relates to devices for comparing distances between the jack and the woods in the game of bowls of the kind having a casing a, spring reel f rotatably mounted within the casing, and a peg i attached to a cord wound on the reel which peg co-operates with a fixed peg on the casing; and comprises a fixed peg o disposed tangentially of the casing with a socket to accommodate the movable peg, and the provision of locking means for controlling the winding and unwinding of the reel. The casing is pressed up from sheet metal and provided with a cover b secured by a stud c which co-operates with a similar stud d to fix the spindle of the reel. The reel is fitted with a ratchet wheel k co-operating with a spring pawl l on the casing. The pawl is disengaged from the ratchet wheel by moving a slide m to allow the spring to rewind the cord. The cover plate is provided with a. tongue bent into the form of an open-ended cylinder n disposed tangentially to the casing to receive the fixed peg o at one end and to house the movable peg i when not in use at the other end. In a modification, the ratchet device and slide are omitted, a friction brake being provided by finger and thumb pressure on the cover plate.
