Abstract

499,819. Measuring-tapes. TAYLOR, J. W. July 27, 1937. No. 20695. [Class 106 (ii)] A steel tape for use in the game of bowls is of arc-shaped cross-section and normally coiled in a casing adapted to stand on the ground, the casing being provided with a rib or arm adapted to contact with the wood while the end of the tape is provided with a finger adapted to contact with the jack. The casing B is rectangular with a flat base, the opening for the tape A being near the base. The tape A which is of steel and of arc-shape section is either wound on a drum in the casing or coiled in an interior circular casing B<1>. When the tape is wound on a drum, the latter is fitted with a spring which is wound up by withdrawal of the tape, and when used with casing B<1>, the tape is attached to a spring at the inner end which spring is attached to a central point in the casing. The rear end of the casing B is provided with a pivoted finger D, the rib D<1> of which is square to the base and when raised may be placed to engage the wood Q. It may be turned down when not in use. The free end of the tape A is fitted with a finger E which is always square to the tape when the latter is drawn out and is adapted to engage the jack R a foot F preventing rocking. A spring operated clamp H adapted to be released by a pivoted finger piece M grips the tape against a fixed piece G. A guard N protects the finger E when the tape is returned to the casing.
