Abstract

404,043. Measures of length. TOWNDROW, E. J., 19, Dunraven Avenue, Salfords, Surrey. July 15, 1932, No. 20007. [Class 106 (ii).] A measuring device, more particularly for the game of bowls comprises a frame having a base and an upright at right angles to each other and an extensible tape measure mounted in the right angle. The base A<1> has at right angles to it an upright A<2> of a height preferably greater than the diameter of the " jack." The upright has a telescopic extension A<3> for use when the " jack " has been forced into the ditch, a pin preventing the extension being entirely withdrawn. A web is formed in the right angle to support the ring-shaped casing B of a spring tape measure either or both side pieces B<1>, B<2> of which may be removable. When the casing B is separate and removable from the web it may be retained in a semicircular recess in the web by lips or flanges on the side pieces. At the outer end of the tape is a pointer C<1> provided with a thumb piece C'. The other end of the tape is clamped to a split pillar B<3> within the casing. The inner surface of the side B<2> is formed with a hollow boss B<4> which fits over the end of the pillar which is retained by a screw B<5>. The tape is led through a slot D<1> in a spring plate D, one end of which is fixed to the wall of the casing. This acts as a brake to retain the tape which is released by pressing a knob D<3>. A calliper E is hinged to the base and is normally housed in a recess therein.
