Abstract
680,618. Winches. GRAHAM, E. K. P. Dec. 24, 1948. [Dec. 27, 1947 ; Dec. 17, 1948] Nos. 33246/48 and 33247/48. Classes 78 (ii) and 78 (v). A winch drum is mounted on a gear wheel engaging a fixed gear and journalled on an eccentric on a driving shaft, whereby a self sustaining effect is obtained once during each revolution of the drum. Fig. 1. A handle at 10 drives shaft 7 which, by means of eccentrics 11 and 12 fixed thereon, gives a rolling motion to drum 18 mounted on the said eccentrics. The drum 18 has internal gears 16 and 17, and the latter roll around gears 4 and 5 fixed to casing 1 so that the drum is driven with a slow differential movement. The wire 19 is wound round the drum 18 and its end is fixed to eye 21 on the casing, the load to be raised being held in the bight of the wire. When the handle is released the drum turns till it reaches a self-locking position. Fig. 4. Drum 48 is similarly driven differentially by handle 46 through shaft 45 and eccentric 47, the drum having internal gears 49 and 50 co-operating with gears 43 and 44 fixed on casing 41. The wire 51 passes from the load (e.g., car to be hauled) and round the drum, the coils being kept tight by roll 52 mounted on frame 53, the frame floating on spring 54 operated by pin 55. Roll 52 may be omitted. Fig. 8. A chair 62 for a painter is suspended on cable 61 secured to an eye on the casing of the winch. Wire part 57 is secured to an upper fixed point and wire part 58 is secured to hanging weight 60. The painter moves himself up or down by rotating the handle. The selflocking property of the drum suspends him in space.
