Abstract
182,621. Dewar, J. May 4, 1921. Ratchet gearing for driving winches comprises an operating-handle mounted above the drum and carrying a pair of alternately-acting gravityactuated pawls which are both disengaged automatically from the ratchet wheel when the operating-handle is moved into a position in which it applies a brake band. A particular construction of detent also is used. The operating-handle 22 carries a pair of alternately-acting hooked pawls 23, 24. The pin 26 forming the pivot of the pawl 24 is adapted to engage the hooked end 35<a> of a band brake lever to apply the brake when the handle is moved anticlockwise to a greater extent than usual. During this additional movement the stop 39 on the lever lifts the pawl 23 out of engagement, and the latter lifts the pawl 24 by engaging a pin thereon. A detent 32, carried by a counterweighted pedal, can be lowered against the action of a weight to permit braked gravity lowering and can be locked in this disengaged position by a pivoted gravity catch 41.
