Guiding load.- Hoisting apparatus for transferring cargo to the deck of a ship or floor of a warehouse includes an arm A pivotally mounted on a derrick K or other support and carrying at its outer end a pulley D and brake E between which the hoisting rope F runs freely during the hoisting of the load but which grip the rope when the catch 0 holding the arm in horizontal position is released by pulling the line X. On release of the catch the arm swings down and the load is moved towards the derrick.
