Winches; self-sustaining gear; brakes.-A winch, normally braked by releasing the winding- handle, and freed by a slight backward movement of the handle, comprises a winch-barrel a loosely mounted on a sleeve d integral with the winding- handle, and rotatable on a stud f. A spring brake-band c, which presses on an internal brake drum b on the winch-barrel, is attached at one end to a pin h on an arm i projecting from the sleeve, and at the other end to a pin i projecting from a ratchet-wheel k. Raising is effected by clockwise rotation as viewed in Fig. 2, the brake band being pressed outwards and the ratchetwheel overrunning its pawl l. Release of the handle causes the pawl to engage the ratchetwheel, whilst the brake retains the winch, barrel. The winch-barrel may be released by freeing the brake by counter-clockwise movement of the handle, and the lowering speed controlled by the back pressure exerted on the handle.
