Abstract
504,329. Winches. SOC. SALVARE. July 4, 1938, No. 19732. Convention date, July 6, 1937. [Class 78 (v)] Two helically - grooved winding-drums 2 are mounted freely on two parallel fixed shafts 3, and are geared together by pinions 4. Separate cables 30 are wound on the drums 2, and may be attached to the two ends of a boat for even lowering and raising, the winch being located in the boat. Power is applied through a handle on a shaft 12 geared by way of pinions 11, 10, 8, 7, 5 to one of the pinions 4. On the shaft 12 are arranged two brakes, one normally in action to prevent any movement of the winch drums 2, and the other coming into action only when the first brake is released and being of the centrifugal type to allow of a regulated unwinding of the drums. The permanent brake comprises jaws 18, Fig. 5, pivoted together at 21 and pressed over a cylinder 16 by springs 20. The cylinder 16 carries pawls 15 which engage a ratchet wheel 14 keyed to the shaft 12 and pinion 11. Integral with the drum 16 is a sleeve 28 extending radially from which are pins 27 on which ride brake sectors 26 bearing through pads 19 on the jaws 18. Thus when the pressure on the cylinder 16, held to the shaft 12 by the pawls 15, is released by turning a lever 24 fitted with a jaw-separating cam 22, the pull on the cables 30 unwinds the drums 2 and the sectors 26 on the rapidly rotating shaft 12 fly out to apply a steady braking action, which depends on the mass of the sectors and the speed of rotation. The lever 24 is fitted with a removable extension 25 protruding through the gear casing 1, and this extension may be applied to another lever which operates a dog clutch between the pinions 7 and 5 in order to free the drums completely from the brake. Each cable 30 is provided with a ball end 31, Fig. 7, for ready attachment to the drum 2, the ball sliding in a slot 32 formed in the drum cheek. Specification 404,132, [Group XXXIII], is referred to.
