Abstract

1,025,652. Winches. LONGBRIDGE FOUNDRY Ltd. Jan. 30, 1963 [Jan. 31, 1962] No. 3779/62. Heading B8B. [Also in Division F2] A hand brake for a yacht windlass for use during the pay-out of an anchor chain &c. operates through relative rotation of arcuate wedges 28, 29, Fig. 4, to bring axially opposed faces of the rotating and fixed parts into frictional engagement. The winch shaft 6, carrying a chain wheel 1 and warping drum 2, is rotatable on a fixed support 7 and is braked by a handle 27 having an arcuate wedge 29 engageable with a fixed arcuate wedge 28 integral with the fixed support 7. Rotation of the handle 27 against the action of a torsion spring 33 takes up axial play of the shaft 6 to bring the relatively rotating parts into frictional engagement. The winch may be rotated by an oscillating handle 14 operating through ratchet gear (not shown) or by a crank handle carrying a gear in engagement with a gear 20 integral with the drum 2.
