Abstract
Springs (6) extend between the faces (7, 8) of respective parts (1, 5) fixed to the engine shaft and a flywheel (4). A free ratchet wheel assembly (9) ensures the part (5) turns only in one direction. A brake piston (10) directly brakes the engine. The flywheel turns freely during braking and uses the kinetic energy to increase the spring tension, the stored spring energy being used to start the stopped engine after braking. A free wheel assembly may be used to prevent the part (5) from turning on the engine shaft in the opposite sense to shaft rotation, with the part (5) being braked against an outer part.
