Geared pulicy - hoists; driving-gear; brakes. - A geared pulley-hoist oontrolled by movements of the hand chain wheel 13 has the wheel mounted on a screwed sleeve 10, Fig. 3, which engages a screwed disk 23 fitted with a peripheral one-way ball-clutch 26 arranged between the disk and housing 14. A clockwise rotation of the chain-wheel 13 screws the sleeve into the disk 23, locks the disk to the housing by means of the ball-clutch and presses a flange 24 of the sleeve against a brake-disk 25 and so forces the brake-ring 22 against the housing, thus coupling the housing to the driving pinion 2 of the pulley-hoist and so raising the load. A slight contra-clockwise rotation of the sleeve 10 releases the brake-disk 25 and frees the pinion 2 so that the load can be lowered under the influence of centrifugal weights 19 acting on the brake ring 22. The unloaded hook can be lowered by a continued contra-clockwise rotation of the chain-wheel, the screwed-disk 23 being first released by means of a pin on the sleeve 10 and the governor weights being held inoperative by means of a cut-away part 17 of the sleeve.
