Geared motor-driven pulley-hoists; drum or barrel winding-machines; brakes; driving-gear.- In an electrically driven hoist the drum f is driven at normal speeds by a motor a and at lower speeds by an auxiliary motor o. The motor a is housed within the drum and drives it through the gears b, c, d and a ring a of internal teeth e. A disc h on the end of the motor shaft is formed with a ring of internal teeth i which mesh with a pinion k rigidly connected with a gear m. The gears k, m are mounted on a drum s which can be prevented from rotating by a brake r. The gear m meshes with a pinion n on the shaft of the auxiliary motor o. The drum s carried brake mechanism q for a brake disc p. The brake r is taken off when the drum is driven by the motor a.
