Abstract
551,580. Motor-vehicle driving gear. AUSTIN MOTOR CO., Ltd., and HAEFELI, J. C. June 20, 1942, No. 7307/41. [Class 79 (ii)] Relates to wheel-hub reducing gear of the kind in which a spur wheel C fixed to the driving axle-shaft B drives an internally-toothed ring E carried by the wheel hub F through idle pinions d<SP>1</SP> mounted on axes d secured to a spider D rigid with the fixed axle casing A. According to the present invention (1) the reduction gear is housed in a gear casing which is integral or rigid with the wheel hub F, projects outwardly threfrom and is of such diameter that an ordinary standard detachable wheel can be passed over it and secured to a flange a of standard size, and (2) the internally-toothed ring E forms part of the gear casing, being bolted between the hub F and a cover f. In the construction shown in Fig. 1 there are six idle pinions d<SP>1</SP> and they form the sole support for the outer end of the shaft B. G is an end thrust member for the shaft B. In the construction shown in Fig. 3 the gear C meshes with idle pinions d<SP>2</SP> integral with pinions d<SP>3</SP> meshing with the ring E.
