Abstract

566,331. Motor vehicle axle gearing. KIRKSTALL FORGE, Ltd., and COWELL, F. R. April 7, 1943, No. 5547. [Classes 79 (ii) and 79 (iv)] In a trolleybus, in order to avoid a large reduction gear at the centre of the axle and to give sufficient ground clearance and a low floor level, a bevel or worm drive 18, 19 is provided between the propeller shaft 16 and the differential gear 20, and a hub reduction gear in each wheel hub 29. The hub gear is preferably of the kind described in Specification 517,465, in which a pinion 25 on the axle shaft 21 drives an annular gear 28 on the wheel hub through idler gears 26 carried by a stationary carrier 27. The wheel 22 and brake drum 31 are secured to the wheel hub by bolts 30. The differential gear is nearer one end of the axle than the other. In order to give maximum ground clearance and a low floor level, the basin 10 of the axle casing is tilted so that its flange 12 is inclined to the vertical as shown in Fig. 2.
