517,465. Driving steering wheels of motor vehicles. KIRKSTALL FORGE, Ltd., AYLWIN, E. A., and COWELL, F. R. June 14, 1938, No. 17627. [Classes 79 (ii) and 79 (v)] In a steering and driving axle of the kind in which each road wheel is driven through a universal joint to permit steering movement of the wheel and reduction gearing is provided within the wheel hub, the universal joint comprises a double joint 51, 52 arranged symmetrically with respect to the steering pivot and the first gear member 25 of the reducing gear together with its driving shaft 22 can slide axially relatively to the other gears meshing therewith to allow for the movement caused by the double universal joint. In the construction shown the joint 52 is prevented from endwise movement by a bearing 53 and is driven by the differential shaft 12. The gear 25 meshes with pinions 26 rotating on stationary pins 29 and meshing with a toothed ring 28 secured to the wheel hub 21 by bolts 34. The pins 29 are carried by an annulus 27 secured on the stub axle 19 by a nut 33. The stub axle is pivoted for steering movements on the main axle 11 by means of bearings 17 mounted on detachable sleeves 36 on trunnions 18 on the main axle. When the stub axle is to be removed bearing caps 38 and screws 37 are removed, and the sleeves 36 are withdrawn by bolts screwed therein and bearing against the ends of the trunnions 18. The reduction gearing runs in oil, and shields 80, 81 are provided for preventing oil from entering the brake drums 40.
