845,094. Variable-speed gear. DAIMLER BENZ A.G. Nov. 5, 1957, No. 16973/59. Divided out of 827,116. Class 80 (2). A motor-car bevel gear differential 8 is driven by a propeller shaft 4 through a crown-wheel 6 having internal teeth 12 meshed by planet pinions 9 mounted on the carrier 14 of the differential, a sun-gear 17 being slidden leftwards from the position shown to engage teeth 20 on the carrier for direct drive but, in the position shown, having teeth 25 engaged with a reaction plate 40 so that it is held stationary for a reduced ratio, the reaction plate comprising a ring 41 surrounding one of the halfshafts 15 and having an axially inclined radial flange 42 lying between parallel faces of the surrounding casing 10. When assembling the gear, the reaction plate 40 is inserted through an aperture in the casing 10, the sun-gear 17 and its associated sleeve are introduced from the right of Fig. 1, and finally the half-shaft 15 is introduced from the left. The reaction plate 40 is secured in position by a flange 44 bolted to the casing 10.
