Abstract

529,077. Motor vehicle driving arrangements. DIFFERENTIAL WHEEL CORPORATION. May 20, 1939, No. 15085. Convention date, Sept. 13, 1938. [Class 79 (ii)] [Also in Group XXXIV] Dual driving-wheels comprise a pair of wheels rotatably mounted on a driving axle and connected together and to the driving axle by a differential gear, braking means being applied directly to one of the wheels, as by a brake drum thereon. According to another feature of the invention the differential gear wheels are all arranged in one plane. In the construction shown in Fig. 1, the inner wheel 7 of a pair is mounted on roller bearings 12, 17 on an axle housing 2, 3. and the outer wheel 31 has a hub 32 mounted rotatably on a bearing 33 on the hub 8 of the wheel 7. The driving axle-shaft 1 has a spider 43 secured thereto, this spider carrying differential planet pinions 53 meshing with internally- and externally-toothed rings 36, 25 respectively secured by bolts 38, 11 to the two road wheels. A brake drum 61 is secured to the road wheel 7 Covers 57, 58 are provided for the wheel and gearing. In the construction shown in Fig. 3, the spider 88 on the axle shaft 1 carries spindles 94 for bevel pinions 93 meshing with two crown bevel wheels 77, 80 fixed respectively to the inner and outer road wheels 7, 31. The bevel wheel 80 is bolted to a member 81 secured by bolts 38 to the road wheel 31, and the bevel wheel 77 is secured by bolts 11 to the hub 8 of the road wheel 7. The two kinds of differential gear are inter-changeable, the planet pinion spiders either being changed by removing their hubs 44 bodily from the axle shaft 1, or by forming them with a removable part 88, Fig. 3, bolted at 89 to the hub 44. The axle shaft 1 is driven in the usual way 'through a central differential gear (not shown).
