Abstract
706,285. Valves. PHILADELPHIA GEAR WORKS, Inc. April 2, 1952 [July 30, 1951], No. 8372/52. Class 135. [Also in Group XXIV] Actuating mechanism for a valve A, Fig. 5, having a screwed stem S movable axially by a nut N, Fig. 6, comprises motor means 11 and a handwheel 13, either of which is connectible to drive the nut through a clutch 31. A wormwheel 26 secured to the nut is driven by a worm on a shaft 28 on which is splined a clutch member 34, Fig. 8, movable by an arm 45, pivoted at 44, to engage either of clutch members 32, 33 respectively attached to pinions 35, 36 freely rotatable on the shaft. Pinion 35 is rotatable by gear 37 on a shaft 14 driven by the handwheel, and pinion 36 is rotatable by a gear 42 driven by the motor. A spring 48 urges member 34 to engage member 33 whereby the motor is connected to drive the shaft 28. With the motor inoperative, initial rotation of the handwheel causes a plunger 49 carried by gear 37 to engage a roller 50 mounted in arm 43 of lever 45 and thereby turn the lever to move member 34 into engagement with member 32, thereby connecting the handwheel to drive shaft 28. A spring 64 permits movement of the plunger should the dogs of the clutch members fail to engage correctly. the arm 43 is held in this position by engagement of its end E in notches SI, S2, Fig. 2, of levers 51a, 51b. pivoted respectively at 51c, 51d and urged together by a spring 54. When the motor is started, a cam 60 spreads the levers, thereby releasing the end E, whereupon spring 48 moves the members 34, 33 into engagement so that the shaft 28 is driven by the motor. U.S.A.
