Abstract

635,944. Driving-mechanism. MANDERS, P. Oct. 14, 1947, No. 27464. [Class 132 (iii)] A toy vehicle of the kind comprising an elastic power storage element adapted to store power by winding is characterized in that the transmission mechanism provides two separate paths of power transmission between the power storage element and a rotatable member or members, each of said paths comprising a one-way clutch, one of which clutches is adapted to transmit torque from the power storage element through the clutch to a rotatable member for one direction only to propel the vehicle, and the other of which one-way clutches is adapted to transmit torque through said clutch to the power storage element from a rotatable member only when said member is rotated in the opposite direction. One or both of said paths includes a gear train with the gear wheels of each individual train permanently in mesh, the or each gear train being so arranged that on rotating the or one of the rotatable members in a direction the reverse of that obtaining during propulsion but at the same speed, said element is wound up at a rate substantially faster than its rate of unwinding during the propulsion of the vehicle. The power storage element may be a coiled spring or a length of india-rubber. As shown, the toy is provided with a pair of driving wheels 4 mounted on an axle 5 carrying a pinion 6 permanently in mesh with a gear 7 on a shaft 8, said gear being coupled through a free wheel clutch device 9 to a pinion 10 mounted to rotate freely about the shaft 8. Gear 7 is permanently in mesh with a pinion 11 mounted to rotate freely about a shaft 12, pinion 10 being in mesh with a gear 13 also mounted on shaft 12 and coupled to pinion 11 through a free wheel clutch device 14. The inner end of a clock spring 15 is connected to shaft 12, the outer end being connected to the housing 17 at a point 16. On,winding by pushing the vehicle backwardly transmission is from wheels 4 via pinion 6, gear 7, pinion 11 clutched to gear 13, thus rotating shaft 12 and winding the spring. Clutch 9 permits independent rotation of pinion 10 driven by gear 13. On releasing the toy, spring 15 transmits via shaft 12, gear 13, pinion 10 clutched to gear 7, pinion 6. and axle 5 to wheels 4, pinion 11 rotating freely due to action of clutch device 14.
