Abstract

124,653. Gray, J. July 5, 1918. Mechanical toys; tops. - Relates to driving- mechanism for toy vehicles, tops, and the like, and comprises a cord drum and gear wheels for rotating a fly-wheel or other spinning element, the act of unwinding the cord by pulling thereon, causing the gear wheels to move into operative connexion, a spring or the like being used to rewind the cord. As applied to a toy vehicle, Fig. 2, the cord 2 is wound round a drum 1 secured to a resilient spindle 4 so that, on pulling the cord by means of a knob 10, the resilient spindle yields and brings a wheel 3 into gear with a pinion 6 on the fly-wheel spindle 7 which driven the ground wheels 9 by frictional contact. A spring 5 reverses the rotation of the spindle 4 and rewinds the cord on the drum 1. In the application to a top, Fig. 3, the cord drum 1<1> is connected to a twisted elastic filament 5<1>, and is guided by a fork 11. On pulling the cord, the wheel 3<1> is moved into gear with the pinion 6<1>, and the body 8<1> of the top is thereby rotated.
