Abstract
589,143. Toys. GREENWOOD, A., and WHITEHOUSE, F. R. B. Nov. 16, 1944, No. 22638. [Class 132 (iii)] [Also in Group XXVI] A self-driving toy has the axle of a pair of running wheels connected to one end of a long elastic member, which passes over pulleys or guides and has its other end fastened to a non- driving part of the toy, so arranged that the axle to be driven can be manually rotated, the elastic member being stretched and wound around the axle, the contraction of the main length of elastic unwinding the wound part and thereby driving the toy. As applied to a toy truck (Fig. 3), one end of an elastic member 15 is secured to the rear axle and the other end is secured to the body of the truck, the member passing over two pulleys 17, 19 slidably mounted on the front axle and a shaft at the rear of the truck respectively. A handle 16 attached to one of the rear wheels enables an operator to wind the elastic member on to the rear axle and, when the motor is wound, a lever 23 may be brought into engagement with a pin 22 projecting from the rear axle to prevent the latter from rotating. On releasing this lever, the rear axle and wheels rotate due to the contraction of the elastic member. A self-tipping mechanism may be incorporated (Fig. 4), in which the tipping body is normally held in a horizontal position by a sliding bolt 31 which engages a socket 30 carried by the tipping body. A spring member 33 is secured to one of the rear wheels which, when the truck is proceeding in a forward direction, springs over the downwardly projecting end 32 of the bolt 31. When the elastic member has unwound, the inertia of the truck winds it on the rear axle in the reverse direction so that a small reverse movement is imparted to the truck, whereupon the spring member 33 engages the end 32 of the bolt 1 and withdraws it from the socket 30 allowing the body to tip under the action of a length of elastic or spring 28. The body may be locked by a bolt 29 which also engages the socket 30.
