Abstract

103,393. Holroyd, J. April 3, 1916. Free-wheel gearing. -Relates to clutch mechanism for transmitting motion from a shaft to a wheel &c. in either direction and permitting the wheel to overrun, which may be used as a substitute for the differential gear on a motor-vehicle. In the form shown, two ratchet-wheels C, D with oppositely-directed teeth are fixed on the driving-axle B of a vehicle inside a wheel hub A loose on the axle. A pivot E in the hub carries two oppositely-directed pawls c, d one or other of which is brought into engagement with the corresponding ratchet-wheel, according to the initial direction of the axle B, by frictionally-driven gearing F. The gear-wheel f is loose on the axle B, but frictionally connected with the wheels C, D by washers pressed by springs f<1>. When the axle B starts to rotate, the wheel f is carried forward by the ratchet-wheels and rocks the sector F connected with the pawls, causing one of the pawls to engage with its wheel and drive the hub in the same direction as the axle. Fig. 5 shows the device applied to the hubs of two wheels of a motor-vehicle mounted on an axle B driven by bevel-gearing, and it enables the wheels to be driven in either direction or to overrun in rounding curves. In a modification, the two ratchet-wheels are mounted on a sleeve on the wheel hub, and the pawls are carried by an enclosing-casing driven by a sprocket-wheel mounted on it, the axle being stationary. Any suitable device may be used to bring the pawls into gear by the initial movement of the axle.
