Abstract
129,754. Allen, J. D. May 17, 1918. Free-wheel gearing. -Relates to motor-vehicle driving mechanism of the kind in which both road wheels are driven by ratchet gear for forward and reversed running. The propellar shaft 3, Fig. 1, drives a gear-wheel 5 secured to a twopart hub 7 which has peripheral slots 11, Fig. 2, into which pass projections 12 on a centrallyarranged driving-disk 9, the projections being smaller than the slots to allow relative rotation between the parts. Intermediate hubs 14 are arranged within the two-part hub and have splined sockets 15 for the ends of the road-wheel axles. The inwardly projecting flanges 16 of the intermediate hubs are formed with ratchet teeth 18, Fig. 4, adapted to be engaged by oppositely facing pawls 20, 21, for forward and reversed drive respectively. The pawls are mounted on the driving-disk 9 and are pressed outwards by springs, the set of pawls not in operation being engaged by the corresponding arms of double dogs 30 pivoted on the driving-disk and having a pin-and-slot engagement 34 with the two-part hub, and the arrangement being such that the slight relative rotation of the two-part hub and driving-disk throws one set of pawls out of gear and allows the springs of the other set to put them in gear and transmit the drive. The shape and arrangement of the pawls allows overrunning - of the pawls which are in engagement.
