Abstract

114,106. Allen, J. D. Aug. 29, 1917. Free-wheel gearing.-The driving mechanism comprises a hollow driving-shaft surrounding a divided intermediate shaft connected to the wheel hubs and driven in the forward direction by overrunning clutches. The hollow shaft is driven by a bevel gear mounted thereon so as to permit lost motion and, on the drive being reversed, a second set of clutches is thrown in. In a modification, only one wheel is driven in the reverse drive; in this form, a hand-operated clutch may be provided for the reverse driving of the other wheel. The hollow shaft comprises sleeves 6 on which spring clutch members 21 are splined, and a central portion 7 which is driven by a hub 5 on the driving bevel gear 4 by means of keys 9 and slots 10. The clutch members 21 engage mating members 20 on intermediate shafts 19 fitted with splined sockets for the wheel shafts 26. The inner ends of the shafts 19 are provided with ratchet wheels 18 adapted to be engaged by spring pawls 17 carried by the hollow shaft 6, 7 and held out of engagement during the forward drive by pins 12. On reversing the drive, the hub 5 moves relatively to the hollow shaft and the pins 12 release pawls 17 for engagement with the ratchets 18. The parts may be arranged to replace an ordinary differential gear in which case the intermediate shafts 19 and tubular members 6 are shorter, the other parts being suitably modified. In the form in which only one rear wheel is driven on the reverse drive, the central ratchets 18 are replaced by a cam member adapted to be moved endways to throw in a single clutch. In this form, a hand-operated clutch may be provided for the reverse drive of the other wheel and comprises clutch members mounted on the members 20, 21.
