Abstract

782,338. Clutches. FICHTEL & SACHS AKT.-GES. March 1, 1956 [March 3,1955], No. 6521/56. Class 80 (2). In a motor vehicle transmission comprising a hydrodynamic clutch combined with a poweroperated friction clutch, a torque-limiting ratchet mechanism by-passes the hydrodynamic clutch in one direction of rotation at speeds below the idling speed of the engine. A flywheel 1 is secured to the primary rotor 2 of a fluid clutch 2, 3 driving a gear-box input shaft 7 through a friction clutch 5, 6. The friction clutch is actuated by engine vacuum through a servomotor 10 under the control of a valve 11 electrically controlled through a gear lever switch 14. Between the input rotor 2 and the driven shaft 4 is a torque limiting ratchet mechanism 15. The ratchet mechanism comprises a pawl 17 pivoted on. the rotor 2 urged inwards by a weak spring 19 which is overcome by centrifugal force on the pawl at a speed below the engine idling speed. A ratchet wheel 20 is rotatably mounted on a hub 21 secured to the shaft 4 and is rotationally connected to the hub by friction plates 22, 23 held in contact by a dished spring 24 tensioned by a nut 25 to provide a torque limiting coupling.
