Abstract
889,598. Clutch control; clutch combinations. DAIMLER - BENZ A.G. July 21, 1958 [July 26, 1957], No. 23352/58. Class 80 (2). In a clutch device for motor vehicles wherein a hydrodynamic coupling 11, as shown, or torque converter having a reactor reacting on a one-way detent, is followed in series by a separating mechanical, preferably friction plate, clutch 12, the latter is disengaged through a release lever 27 by a geared quick-starting electric motor or, as shown, an electromagnet 33 energized either automatically or manually by a gear-change device and engaged by springs 20 variably damped through the release lever 27 by a one-way restricted pneumatic dashpot 35 having a throttling valve at 36 controlled automatically by means responsive to the speed difference between the two sides of the separating clutch 12. The throttling valve may comprise a slide or radially or conically-waisted valve (Fig. 2, not shown), axially shiftable in either direction by said means which may comprise the diaphragm of a double-acting motor (Fig. 2, not shown), having opposing chambers receiving pressure oil respectively from engine and vehicle driven pumps which may form part of an automatic gear change, opposed centrifugal governors (Fig. 3, not shown), connected by tension springs to a common actuating member, or speed-responsive gearing. The dashpot 35 has a one-way valve 37 provided in the dashpot piston or, as shown, in the dashpot cylinder. The hydrodynamic coupling 11 may be bridged by a free-wheel 17 to permit engine braking, and the clutch plate 18 may be resiliently mounted on the driven shaft 19 to damp torsional oscillations.
