Abstract

[Also in Divisions Fl and F2] In an autocycle wherein the engine drives the rear wheel through a reduction gearing including a pulley 7 and sprocket wheel 9 mounted on the pedal shaft 3, a freewheel 13 being provided between the pulley and sprocket, a locking device 18 can be operated by the rider to lock the pulley and sprocket together to permit the engine to be driven from the rear wheel for starting and to allow the engine to be used as a brake. The sprocket 9, connected to the rear wheel by chain 10, is slidable axially by a control member 24 to engage a clutch member 18, carried by the sprocket sleeve 16, with a clutch 19 on the pulley 7, the control member 24 comprising a member 21 attached to the sprocket 9 with inclined cam faces and helical teeth 22, engaging corresponding stationary members 23. During normal running, clutch 18 is disengaged and the engine-driven pulley 7 drives sprocket 9 through the engaged freewheel 13. For starting, member 24 is operated by a handlebar control or a known back-pedalling mechanism, to move sprocket 9 to the left to engage clutch 18, whereby upon pedalling the rear wheel is driven by the usual sprocket in the right-hand end of shaft 3 and sprocket 9, driven from the rear wheel by chain 10, drives pulley 7 to turn the engine over. When the engine has started, clutch 18 is disengaged; it may be re-engaged whenever engine braking is desired, by a known centrifugal clutch disengaging the engine from pulley 7 when the engine speed drops below a predetermined value.
