Abstract

21,013. Couture, A. Oct. 19. Motor cycles.-Relates to motor bicycles, and comprises the arrangement of the motor, toothed reducing driving-gear, and a special brake contrivance which comes i n t o action whenever the motor ceases driving. As shown in Fig. 1, the motor a is placed behind the pedal shaft between the latter and the back-wheel mud guard, and the downtube b is forced at the lower end to accommodate it. To keep the pedal shaft narrow, the valve gear is placed at the back instead of at the side of the motor. The reducing driving-gear is shown in section in Fig. 2. The shaft k<1> to be driven is tubular and surrounds the flywheel shaft m. It is driven from the crank g through the medium of epicyclic toothed wheels i, j contained in the flywheel and running in gear with a fixed wheel l. The brake contrivance is shown in Fig. 3. The hub q of the rear wheel is driven in a forward direction by the chain-wheel u through the ratchet v, x ; but, if the wheel n is retarded, as when the engine ceases to drive, the ratchet teeth press it laterally against a sliding cone s, which is held against rotation by a piece t. The pressure of this cone against the hub produces the desired braking effect.
