Abstract

11. Robinson, E. T. Jan. 1. Motor-cycles; driving-mechanism; disconnecting driving-wheels; brakes.-The driving-belt of a motor bicycle or tricycle is tightened and slackened by means of a hand-lever, which is also connected to a band brake on the rear wheel. On the crank-shaft f of the motor is fitted a sprocket-wheel g driving by means of a chain another sprocket-wheel i mounted on a hand-lever a which is pivoted on a boss on the crank casing concentric with the crankshaft. Fixed to the wheel i is a pulley h connected by a belt m to the rear driving-wheel. The lever a is extended downwards and is connected by a rod s to a band brake t, which is brought into action when the belt is at its slackest point, The lever a is held in position by a ratchet p. The tension of the chain j may be adjusted by means of an eccentric bearing for the sprocket i. By varying the size of the sprockets g, i, the gear ratio can be varied to any extent.
