Abstract

5815. Shearing, F. W. March 8. Driving-mechanism; treadle-levers.-Cycles are driven by means of rubber-coated friction wheels &c. In the form shown as applied to a bicycle in Fig. 1, wheels A, C, having rubber rims and secured to the hub and crank axle K respectively, are connected together by a rubber-rimmed wheel B mounted in bearings D, which can be pressed downwards in a guide-tube G secured to the frame, as shown, by a rod secured to the bearings D and engaged by a nut F mounted in the tube G. The axle K is driven by treadle-levers J connected to each other by a chain &c. passing over a pulley N on the top bar, and connected by free-wheel clutches to the axle K. In a modification, the levers drive a large wheel having a rubber-lined internal flange to engage the wheel A, and in another form, shown in Fig. 4, the wheels A are connected by clutches to the driving-wheel hub and are driven by rubber-lined segments D secured to arms K formed on treadle-levers F pivoted to the chain stays. Stops I, J on the segments limit the motion of the levers.
