Abstract

23,927. Warmington, E. J. Nov. 4 D r i v i n g-mechanism ; treadle-levers. - In driving - mechanism for bicycles &c., an up-andd o w n motion of the pedals E through a limited arc imparts a continuous rotary motion to the road wheel by means of crank levers C, D, rods F, and cranks G. The cranks G are arranged in opposite directions while the pedal cranks are mounted upon a spindle B in such a manner that, when one pedal is at the top of its stroke, the other is at the bottom. Clutch mechanism may be interposed between the cranks G and the road wheel ; this mechanism preferably comprises rollers J adapted to engage discs H, so that, when pressure is applied to the pedal, the corresponding rollers engage the disc, and, when the pressure is released, a rubber pad disengages the rollers and the wheel runs free ; when pressure is applied and the pedals are held stationary, the rollers act as a brake. To avoid dead points, the rollers may be caused to move to and fro through a limited arc on the disc ; in this case the pedal cranks may be connected by bevel gearing, as shown in Fig. 3, or they may engage slotted blocks which move in guides and are connected to the levers I carrying the rollers. The joints between the levers and cranks are preferably loose and furnished with a spring or rubber cushion. Stops or the like L, Fig. 3, may regulate the up-anddown travel of the pedals.
