Abstract

17,530. Seek, H. July 26. Brakes; driving-mechanism.-Relates to a brake operated by back-pedalling, which may be applied to the driving-wheel hub, as shown in the Figures, or to the crank axle. The chain-wheel b is loosely mounted on the hub a, which is enlarged at one end and provided with flanges d, e. A strap f is arranged between these flanges, its ends being connected by bolts g to a ring lever h, which is pivoted on a pin i secured to the chain-wheel b. When the wheel b is propelled in the forward direction, the strap f is expanded and caused to grip against the outer flange d and so impart motion to the hub a, but when the rider backpedals the strap is contracted on to the flange e and acts as a brake.
