Abstract

10,092. Lamblin, L. April 28. Clutches, applications of; auxiliary foot propelling - mechanism; motor - starting devices, applications of.-The crank-bracket of a motorcycle is fitted with an arrangement of clutches, so that the cycle can be driven either by the pedals or by the motor, or by both, and the engine can be started by the pedals when the cycle is stationary. Within the bracket a is arranged a sleeve b, carrying at one end the internal member c of a friction clutch, and at the other end a series of clutch teeth d. An inner sleeve e carries the outer member j of the friction clutch, which is driven from the engine shaft by a chain. A spring h, interposed between nuts f, g secured to the sleeves b, e respectively, tends to keep the friction clutch in engagement. The pedal cranks are secured to the spindle n, which carries a toothed clutch member p on a feather key; one of the pedals carries a pawl engaging a ratchet-wheel on the sleeve e. To start the engine, the friction clutch is disengaged by operating the lever s and forcing the spindle n and the sleeve e to the right. When the lever s is released, the cycle is driven through the friction clutch c and sprocket v. Engagement of the dog clutch p, d gives a positive drive between the pedals and the rear wheel, the motor being disconnected by raising the pawl.
